Transforming Commercial Design Through Remote Talent, Data-Driven Space Planning, and Advanced Collaboration Tools
When the world’s most prominent commercial design firm recognized the need to modernize how they manage talent, space, and data, they joined forces with our team to reimagine workplace design and delivery. Through strategic collaboration with One Workplace, Steelcase, CET Design, and more, we helped them tackle the fundamental challenge of how people work, where they work, and what technology they need to excel—wherever they are.
Challenge: Evolving Spaces and an Evolving Workforce
The commercial design industry had reached a critical inflection point. As organizations adapt to hybrid and remote models, their designers also demand the flexibility to work from anywhere. Yet:
Enterprise-Only Software: Core CET tools limited usage to on-site enterprise licenses, forcing designers into physical offices.
Talent Drain & Skill Gaps: A shortage of qualified CET designers persisted, as top talent opted for roles offering better work-life balance and remote flexibility.
Outdated Data Practices: While many design firms gathered data on space utilization, few systematically used it to close feedback loops and inform next-generation workspace strategies.
Approach: A Data-Driven, People-Focused Redesign
New Remote Design System
We worked with CET Design vendors to become the first entity to secure a master license granting on-demand remote CET access to independent designers. This drastically broadened the available talent pool and removed location barriers.
By shifting from physical facility-based enterprise solutions to an online, subscription-based usage model, designers could integrate space plans, 3D prototypes, and real-time updates—all from their home offices.
Predictive Index (PI) & Behavioral Insights
We deployed the PI Index to map designer aptitudes, preferences, and cognitive styles. This enabled robust talent-matching:
Who Thrives Remotely vs. On-Site: We predicted which designers excel with autonomy and which prefer in-person teamwork.
Team Dynamics & Bias Reduction: By viewing each designer’s PI data, we built balanced project teams, ensuring that complementary strengths aligned with the project’s demands. This also helped reduce unconscious bias by focusing on measurable behavioral traits rather than subjective impressions.
Holistic Space Planning & Data Loops
Using real-time occupancy and utilization data, we studied how employees interact with their spaces—meeting rooms, social hubs, and focus areas. We then created a feedback loop to refine design decisions:
Iterative Redesign: Adjusted layout strategies, furniture selection, and technology placements to reflect actual usage patterns.
The result was a living, adaptable design system—one that evolves with occupant behavior and ensures spaces serve people’s genuine, data-proven needs.
Collaboration with Industry Leaders
We partnered with One Workplace for integrated furniture solutions and Steelcase for advanced workspace configurations. Their insights into user ergonomics blended with our behavioral analytics, creating a future-proof workplace blueprint.
This synergy not only streamlined commercial design workflows but also showcased how thoughtful, data-driven changes yield meaningful ROI through higher employee satisfaction and optimized real estate utilization.
Key Outcomes: Reshaping Work & Elevating Designers
Expanded, Flexible Talent Pool: The new remote CET licensing structure unlocked a previously inaccessible cohort of top-tier designers. This alone mitigated the talent shortage and dramatically improved recruitment.
Better Work-Life Balance & Reduced Turnover: Designers could now work where they’re most productive—lowering burnout and raising job satisfaction.
Data-Backed Design Decisions: By continuously analyzing occupant behavior, the firm crafted “smart” spaces that improve productivity and well-being, validated by ongoing usage data.
Scalable Framework: The success story provides a repeatable template for bridging technology, behavioral analytics, and space design—applicable to new geographies, emerging markets, and next-generation office models.
Why It Matters
Talent Retention & Growth: When designers have robust remote options and a supportive, data-informed environment, they stay engaged longer and produce higher-quality work.
Innovation Through Data & Behavior: Tying usage data to design solutions fosters an evolutionary approach—offices become adaptable ecosystems that reflect user needs in real time.
Industry Transformation: By aligning enterprise solutions with remote-friendly licenses, the entire commercial design community can progress beyond legacy processes—boosting competitiveness and opening new service lines.
Looking Forward: The Future of Hybrid Commercial Design
This ground-breaking collaboration reshaped the way corporate environments are conceptualized, built, and managed. With the integration of PI Index insights, flexible CET access, and a steadfast commitment to data-driven iteration, leading design firms are now empowered to grow talent globally, orchestrate spaces for evolving work patterns, and deliver consistently elevated employee experiences.
